SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL – THE RESCUE

Rating: G
Length: 114 mins

The edge-of-the-seat, headline-grabbing story of the international efforts to rescue a Thai youth soccer team from a flooded cave, from the Oscar-winning directors of Free Solo.

June 2018, Northern Thailand. Twelve boys and their coach are trapped by rising waters in the vast Tham Luang cave system. A specialist team, including British cave divers Rick Stanton and John Volanthen, is hastily assembled. It seems like a lost cause, but after navigating kilometres of convoluted passageways, the UK duo finally locate the missing soccer players. But how to rescue them? Australian anaesthetist and cave diver Richard Harris (2019 Australian of the Year) is called on to help. Filmmakers Vasarhelyi and Chin piece together this remarkable story using original footage, interviews with rescuers, dramatic re-enactments and computer graphics. A rollercoaster of emotions and thrills, The Rescue (2021 TIFF People’s Choice Award) is a fitting tribute to the courage and endurance of all involved.
