Set during WWI and loosely based on a real event, PATHS OF GLORY stars Kirk Douglas as a colonel attempting to shield his men after an attack goes disastrously wrong and the commanding general of the campaign demands punishment via executing several of the soldiers involved for cowardice. Another anti-war broadside that garnered Kubrick further critical acclaim as a talent to watch, it was nominated at the BAFTAS in the Best Film category, and won the young director the Grand Prix Award from the Belgian Film Critics Association (which no doubt incensed the French government of the time, who were so critical of the depiction of the French army in the film it remained unseen in that country until 1975).
