Kubrick returned to the subject of anti-war filmmaking that had preoccupied him at the start of his career in FULL METAL JACKET, a sharp critique on the Vietnam War via the story of a platoon of U.S. Marines. Smart-aleck recruit Private ‘Joker’ Davis (Matthew Modine) endures the foul-mouthed, abusive training doled out by drill sergeant Hartmann (R. Lee Erney), who saves his worst treatment for the overweight, bumbling Private ‘Gomer Pyle’ Lawrence (Vincent D’Onofrio). But after witnessing how the human mind can snap under authoritarian cruelty, when Joker is finally shipped to Vietnam he may not have it in him to survive unscathed. The film stands as one of the most thorough cinematic representations of war’s ultimate pointlessness.
