Bell plays Byron Widner, a young man taken in by a group of racist skinheads led by the sinister Fred “Hammer” Krager and his wife, Shareen (Vera Farmiga). Raised as a white supremacist, Byron is an eager adherent and a fearless fighter, capable of terrifying acts of violence. When he meets and falls for Julie (Macdonald), a mother of three girls who’s had her own history with white supremacists, Byron is faced with a difficult choice. Bell is brilliant as the tormented man trying to do the right thing, going to the extent of undertaking years’ worth of excruciating removal of his racist tattoos. Skin takes us into a world of violent hatred and shows the difficulty and possibility of finding a different path.
