Personal tragedy and incompetence at the highest level are the potent ingredients of a large scale drama directed by one time Dogme 95 minimalist Thomas Vinterberg (Festen, 1998). The screenplay by
Saving Private Ryan writer Robert Rodat focuses on Mikhail Kalekov (Schoenaerts), a submariner trapped on the ocean floor after a calamitous explosion. Seydoux is electrifying as Kalekov’s angry wife Tanya, who wants answers about her husband’s fate. The film’s moving personal drama is matched by its outrage. Rodat and Vinterberg point a furious finger at Russian officials, whose pride and arrogance contributed in no small way to one of the most tragic events in any nation’s peacetime naval history.
