Stephen Sondheim’s legendary musical is staged for the first time at the National Theatre and broadcast captured live to cinemas.

New York, 1971. There’s a party on the stage of the Weismann Theatre. Tomorrow the iconic building will be demolished. Thirty years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather to have a few drinks, sing a few songs and lie about themselves. Featuring a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21, it’s directed by Dominic Cooke (The Comedy of Errors).

REVIEWS:

“An ingenious revival of a musical that perfectly fuses splendour and poetic sadness. Played without a trace of camp and no interval, this is a production that perfectly captures the sustained emotional arc of Sondheim and Goldman’s musical. I came out admiring the show more than ever.”THE GUARDIAN. 5 STARS!

“A brilliant and beguiling show about the past, ageing and the allure of glitter.” THE SUNDAY TIMES.

“Imelda Staunton, Janie Dee and Philip Quast make this revival not just triumphant, but transcendent!” THE STAGE. 5 STARS!

“Surpasses your wildest dreams for this show. It’s jaw-droppingly great.” THE INDEPENDENT. 5 STARS!
