Plot Summary:
Outback schoolteacher John Grant stops over in the mining community of Bundayabba en route to Sydney. His plans go awry when he gets drunk and loses all his money in a two-up game. Befriended by Tim, his mates and the inscrutable Doc, John continues drinking and has a failed sexual encounter with Tim's daughter Janette. The next day he joins a brutal, drunken kangaroo hunt waking up in Doc's squalid hut confused and violated. He hitches a ride out of town only to find himself accidentally back in "the Yabba". After a suicide attempt John returns to his isolated schoolhouse.
