Review by David Stratton
The fashion designer Tom Ford has branched out into directing with his debut film A SINGLE MAN and with great initial success, because COLIN FIRTH won Best Actor when the film screened last year at the Venice Film Festival and recently won the BAFTA.

Firth plays 52 year old George Falconer, a British professor teaching at a college in Los Angeles in 1962. George is gay and his partner of many years, played in flashback by MATTHEW GOODE, was killed in a road accident eight months ago. He is in deep grief.

I think it is an exceptionally beautiful film. It's a very small story, but emotionally a very powerful story and it's so beautiful, it's like a kind of perfect jewel.....the performance of Colin Firth is extraordinary.
